⚠️ International Legal Notice

Your Responsibility: Metal detecting laws vary significantly across Europe. Ignorance of the law is not a defence. You must ensure you have valid permissions and insurance (such as NCMD) before travelling.

Quick Guide to European Restrictions
FRANCE Strictly Regulated. Illegal to search for history/art without a Prefectural license (rarely granted). "Leisure" detecting is a legal grey area and risky.
IRELAND Illegal. Strictly prohibited to search for archaeological objects anywhere. You cannot use a detector near monuments without a state license.
SPAIN Strict. generally prohibited on any historical sites. Laws vary by region (Andalusia is very strict), often requiring licenses that are hard for tourists to get.
ITALY Mixed. Beaches are generally tolerated. Inland searching for antiquities is strictly forbidden; all finds belong to the state.
BELGIUM License Required. In Flanders, you must have a specific metal detecting license from the agency for Immovable Heritage.
NETHERLANDS Allowed (With Rules). Generally permitted if you do not dig deeper than 30cm and stay away from registered monuments.
